Pig cells may be an alternative to human cells, especially since substantial strides have been made in recognizing why the transplanted cells are rejected. Now work can begin on better treatments and ways to repress the rejection. Once safer and more effective ways of repressing the transplant rejection system, thousands of diabetics will benefit from this new diabetes treatment.
Research is ongoing and if it they continue to produce superior results, clinical testing on humans could take place within the next few years. Biosecure buildings are now being built to raise hale and hearty pigs for future transplants of pig islet cells to humans. These biosecure facilities will be required to meet government controls and the hope is the buildings will be complete when new drugs are engineered to keep the body from rejecting the cells.
